Reader you must know if I didn’t have the incentive to share this on my blog, I’d never have treated myself to this planning help…I’m such a “Nelly, Needs to Help Someone Else, To Help Myself!~” We each have a motivating need, to get us going “Keep it Simple Sally; Needs to be Organized Wilma, Needs to Have a little Fun Forenza!~ Ida Needs to be Inspired…and my need to help someone else too, is helpful for me but I hope its not annoying to you. Bless you for being gracious, but I suppose that is what the blogging role can be filled with, so its not too uncommon for everybody sharing this and sharing that! But thats my motivation behind it, now you know the truth.

Woooooooooooooooooahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the coolest, Em. What I love about this, is how you have personalized everything to the very unique needs of your children. I see your intent in sharing is not to inspire a copy-cat experience, but to show how you can adapt ANYTHING, to make it the perfect thing for your own family. So much insight, wisdom, and love in this. Plus, so much of the real reason behind the doing of it. I think you know what I mean. It just reminds me of how in Montesorri you teach an exercise in say sweeping up a little pile of potpourri. Every activity has a direct aim and an indirect aim. I always wanted to think that the direct aim was to learn to be self-sufficient, say and how to help around the house, for this example. But no, the direct aim was to prepare coordination for writing. It was the incidental, indirect aim, to teach ability in a household chore. So it is with your homeschooling. You have the indirect aim of providing your children with a first rate education. But the direct aim is to raise faithful children, who will be loving family members, and thoughtful citizens among their fellowman. It is just awesome. And yes, I know all the bit about it’s one thing to have lofty goals, and then there’s daily life. But whatEVER element of this you do, and I’ll bet it’s more than you even realize, will be so powerful in their lives. Truly. God Bless . . . . .
Mom,
Thank you for your good words. I thank you for understanding my heart. When I’ve been to blogs that have shared the ins and outs of their specific planning, I have grown so much, inspired that I can do more than I think I can, giving me a place to stretch to. I am so thankful they’d post these helpful things. Of course I do far less than this plan, but last month, the last day, we made a cherry pie due to Abraham Lincoln, and George Washington’s birthdays. Milly read to me aloud the tradition idea, from that rich, pink book you gave me, and then when I took Rawl on an errand we decided to run to the store for some cherry pie filling. I think after two years of having that info in the month of February for my plan, plus other incoming sources of inspiration, my brain was finally ready to process and implement it.
By all means, like you say, I am positive every home should look different in what scriptures and lessons and experiences they provide, and how they teach them, but perhaps a scripture or poem here might be kyfed…or just the effort itself can be a spark to ignite another soul. LaDawn Jacobs gave the gift of her binder with memorizations, poems and scriptures, that she worked on with her family to the public at large I think originally through BYU classes, much of which is where I have gotten my info, (including a lot from the Book of Virtues book you gave me, as well). As she reached out and mentored me by passing along her information to the general public, I hope I can be a strong link in the chain, willing to vulnerably present what we work towards in our home, and hoping that other women won’t be offended or intimidated, but encouraged in their own efforts. Our generation must take the batan that our wise elders give to us and that we also collect from our peers, and then pass what we gain to others; These simple routines and spiritual efforts are the powerful secrets that tie our days with hope and faith for love and improvement. I know I count those who inspire me as my most cherished blessings.
Love you Mother! ~Emily
I’m so glad you’re willing to share, Emily! I think I’d be a completely lost home schooler, if not for the abundant resources I find from other homeschooling mothers online. I’m so grateful! I LOVE reading through others’ schedules and plans and implementing some of those ideas in our own schedule. It’s exciting to me to see that you also work on scripture and poem memorization with your kids. I’ve started doing that in a more organized manner, and it’s really blessing our home! So, here’s my question. Do you plan for an entire year at once? Or do you go month by month? How do you plan for each month? I’d love to know what your favorite resources are, too.
Thanks, again, for sharing! One of these days I mean to write a post about our own devotional.
Thanks for your inspiring example in all areas!
Stephanie,
I do love my on-line support and help too, except for the caviat I should do this but I wish mom’s would post their ideal schedules and then real schedules. That could be interesting, because sometimes I measure against someone else’s ideal. I am so excited to hear you also memorize scriptures and poems.
Anyway, I was being super honest when I said I was able to post this in leu of the motivation to be able to share with others. I have never planned for the year before, and felt that this year, I should. I didn’t know what trials would hit and if they did I’d loose even more brain capacity, so that preparation mode, coupled with the motivation to share (a deadline before it got too late into September). It was a little hairy and tiring, but I am so glad I did it.
In the Book of Virtues, by William J. Bennett, it has all these subjects, such as integrity, etc. I just allotted a month by what I thought we’d need, and most of the poems came from the chapters. I could just use the book but thought a poem title name gave me more likelihood that I’d read it. The topic of I believe perseverance from The Book of Virtues, I landed in late winter on the brink of Spring…so we could persevere. Then all the poems listed are almost exclusively from The Book of Virtues, but also from my LaDawn Jacob’s collection. They are all quite preachy poems, rather than free lance and beautiful, but I am ok with that for its purpose to sink truths into the heart and mind. My mom gave me a holidays by the month book that I put in there, and such (and really hardly use that but it did help us discover St. Lucia’s day and now Feb’s Washington and Lincoln birthdays.) I copy and paste the goals for the children over and over, but I did make a schedule for Milly’s cursive letters at the beginning of the year. I used the Eyre’s book and divided that up. It was really really hard to do science, but I wanted to not sag so much this year in that so I tried making a game plan schedule with a few books I had.
Really I started three years ago, with just the scriptures, the next year I added in poetry and then the next year, I added in the subject goals and such, and that stretch with the thought of pending trials, and sharing other wise I don’t think I could have made the leap. This year (as in January) I used Sprout Robot to add in the gardening goals, and the house chores like filters, well that came from a book and I STILL haven’t been doing those!! Its so very hard to everything, but that’s what I love about Grand Hog day, the movie, its one baby step at a time that we get to where we want to be! And only by discovering Christ’s grace can we really improve on the output we are capable of, don’t you think?
I can’t wait for you to post your devotional ideas and sample because I just know it will help me get into a better more inspired spirit every morning. I used to do that more with three children and now we are just read the poem and scriptures and maybe a scripture story from a book…its simple and doable but I’d love to stretch and be more inspired atleast sometimes!
I LOVE you Steph so much! Thanks for your support it means so much.
Emily
